Restoring a Craftsman – it’s a beautiful thing!

The owners of this 1906 Craftsman home in Seattle’s Capitol Hill contacted us last year with the hope that we could breathe new life into their recent acquisition. Every room in the home required work, and fortunately these clients saw the importance in restoring rather than replacing. Certain additions took contemporary style cues, like the basement’s mini kitchen (soon to be Air B & B). Other additions drew from period designs, such as the sunroom’s bespoke banquette. Thoughtful use of color and light enhance this home’s qualities and character, giving residents the sensations of warmth and comfort. This home’s rich history is its greatest challenge and greatest strength, leaving an undeniable impression.

The Living Room

This illustrates our interior wall paint color scheme along with wood work and window restoration. We installed old-school picture molding in this two toned room with blue sky ceiling, and wheat field wall tone. Stickley MacIntosh furnishings came from Selden’s in Bellevue. The chosen stained glass lighting fixtures give the room the added warmth of colored glass. The ceiling fixture came from Quoizel and the wall sconces custom made at Meyda. All of this is exhibiting a quality of nature in the style of the Arts and Crafts movement.

The Fireplace

The Batchelder tile fireplace is combined with the contemporary mantel design. With a twelve color wall paint scheme for the house, we used Farrow and Ball from Daly’s, Seattle, WA, offering modern selections from their beautifully curated palette.

The Dining Room

While there was some back and forth to the design plan, we ended up paying heed to the simple elements of the dining room. Our Belltown Design color scheme integrated well with a custom handmade Mission chandelier from Meyda. We refinished the wood work, unstuck the windows that were painted shut, and upholstered three blue chenille cushions.

The Kitchen

The kitchen was previously remodeled around 2010, replete with fir Shaker cabinets and dark bronze bin pulls. We repainted the walls with Farrow and Ball “Tallow”. This salvaged, kitchen store cabinet is overflowing with Craftsman character, and is a central element in the interior design of this home. We painted it (and the interior sunroom window not pictured here) with a high-gloss enamel finish from Fine Paints of Europe, in a playful color statement for everyday life! The Acorn cabinet hardware gives it just the right amount of early American “rustic”, and clear glass, mullioned doors show off the food labels we love so much.

The Sunroom

We designed and built a sunroom banquette, custom-made to suit this family’s living style. Stain matching this room was crucial as it was a hub of wood types and needed to be unified with wood stain. The cushion fabrics are lively and fun, and this family is looking forward to having breakfast here!

Powder / Laundry Room

We completely remodeled the Main Floor Bathroom and created a multipurpose Powder Room / Laundry Room. This small space is accessible for both doing the laundry and for dinner guests to freshen up. This Powder/Laundry Room is located adjacent to the kitchen and sunroom; its so much easier than climbing or ascending the stairs!

Staircase and Storage

The stairs leading up to the Master Suite are the old attic stairs, curving and narrow, opening up to a spacious room full of light.

Bathroom and Wet Room

The walk in shower is so big that the whole family can fit!:) Beautiful marble tiling job with bench seat and view windows with the hex tile floor being definitely a period statement. As it turned out, our brand new bathroom wall on the shower side, was a perfect tile match to the existing tile. .. phew!

The Master Bedroom

As part of our remodel, we divided the Master Suite with a wall of windows to the bathroom, to continue to let the light in. The walls are painted with one of our go-to colors, London Stone by Farrow and Ball. This bedroom full of fir wood, is warm and peaceful, set apart, yet still immediately accessible to the children’s rooms, one floor below.
The Master Bedroom in this home is a sanctuary in itself. It is on the third floor of the house with a commanding Western view of the neighborhood, the Space Needle and Puget Sound. The furnishings are made by Seattle’s own McKinnon’s; the Shoji Collection in Walnut, offering a graceful, angled line to create rest and solitude. Some of our greatest successes may have been craftsman remodels. With proper execution, these homeowners ended up enjoying modern technology, without losing the integrity and charm of a historical time piece. We have a passion for all things vintage, and relish the opportunity to showcase a timeless patina or reveal hidden luster.
