Concrete is cool!

When presented with the opportunity to design something innovative, Belltown Design is all over it! The aim for this combined kitchen and dining space was for it to flow smoothly from one room to the other. We wanted a crisp and clean aesthetic, functioning well for cooking, eating and working!

Our design for the island and countertop edge profile, offered the curved corners of Mid-Century Modern design, along with walnut wood backing, to add balance while warming this cool concrete element. Dark-stained wood cabinets and pantry door, provide color contrast to the brushed nickel cabinet hardware, appliances and the creamy white, cast iron, porcelain coated, Kohler sink. Our aim for this kitchen/dining room design was to provide for comfortable movement from one room to the other. For a growing family, this means everything!

This design was inspired by the flowing curves of Frank Lloyd Wright. We wanted to create a waterfall affect, the freestanding countertop “pouring” from the kitchen side to the dining room side. This collaboration required in depth design drawings, and the translation / fabrication by concrete mason, Ivan Lindblad. Ivan built custom molds, piecing the concrete elements of this kitchen together.

The carefully selected backsplash tile, United Tile, Sonoma Tilemakers – Stellar, Ivory, Delancey 3″ x 9″ to give a relief, modern appeal.

The Exos Collection lighting fixtures from Hubbardton Forge, weave in a lovely blend of classic, craftsman, and contemporary design. With all of the lighting on dimmers, this homeowner is afforded the opportunity to switch from utility to atmosphere with a turn of a dial. In the end, Ivan applied Westcoat EC11, Concrete Gray AND WESTCOAT SC66, Clear Matte Finish giving the surface a supple hand and the quality in the kitchen to last a lifetime! The results provide comfort in lifestyle to move freely about the space.
